Leo Lionni

Leo Lionni was an Italian-American author, illustrator, and graphic designer. He was born in 1910 in Holland and moved to Italy at the age of five. He studied architecture and later worked as a graphic designer in Milan. In 1939, he moved to the United States and began working as a freelance illustrator for magazines and advertising agencies.
Lionni is best known for his children's books, which often feature animals as protagonists. His most famous works include Frederick, Swimmy, and Inch by Inch. He also wrote and illustrated four books about a mouse named Cornelius, which were published between 1968 and 1972.
Lionni's books are known for their vivid illustrations and simple, yet powerful messages. He often used animals to explore themes of friendship, cooperation, and the importance of being yourself. His books have been translated into more than 20 languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide.
Lionni was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1989 for his book, Frederick. He was also the recipient of the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1984 and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal in 2001. He passed away in 1999 at the age of 89.
